There’s nothing quite like having a baby. Bringing a new life into the world is something that brings meaning to many people’s lives. It’s also an incredible ball of stress and hormones as potential parents fret about the future. While not everything is under a parent’s control, they can ensure that they have the items purchased will help with raising the baby easily and properly.

There’s a huge number of items that a baby will need as they grow. While you can’t get everything for your child, you can start with the things they are going to need in the first few months of life. What follows is a simple list with some of the basics. These are the essentials that will help you get through the early days with your child. Make sure that you’re not missing anything.

1 - Baby Furniture

At the beginning, this will mostly be the baby’s crib. A good crib needs to be comfortable for the baby, and provide a safe situation so that  there’s no chance of the baby injuring itself when it’s moving around and potentially falling out of the crib. Another piece of furniture that could be useful is a dedicated changing table. This provides a specific location for all changing tasks and can localize used diapers to a specific region.

2 - Car Seat and Carrier

For infants, the car seat and carrier are combined into a single item that will detach from the car and allow you to carry a child easily wherever you are. If you choose to have separate items, you will need to transfer a baby every time and that can be very troublesome. Any carrier should be comfortable for the baby and allow them to drift off to sleep easily. Many will rock when placed on the ground.

3 - Stroller

A baby stroller is always important. The stroller allows a family to walk around without having to carry the child in their carrier. No matter your arm strength, lugging around that new bundle of joy will test your muscles and stamina. A stroller should have large wheels that provide a steady base and ensure it won’t tip over. Strollers come in a wide variety of different styles, so it’s good to look ahead to find something that appeals to you.

4 - Baby Proofing Supplies

You will usually have some time before your baby start moving around, but having the baby proofing supplies ready to go is important and easy to miss. Baby proofing simply ensures that a baby won’t become injured while it is exploring this new world it has entered. Baby proofing typically features two main aspects. The first is softening corners and edges. This can ensure that as a baby is learning to move, it won’t fall and hurt itself nearly as much. The other aspect is in keeping a baby from dangerous items. This contains items like locks on cupboards which contain cleaners or covers on electrical outlets.

5 - Diapers

It may seem like an obvious thing, but it’s easy to forget diapers when you’re trying to prepare your home for a baby’s arrival. It can be tricky since you don’t fully know what size your baby will be, but infant size diapers usually take this into account and are somewhat adjustable. This makes sure your baby is going to be comfortable right from the start.

6 - Baby Clothing

If the baby has some excited first time grandparents, there’s a good chance they’ve been sending clothing for months as the time approached. Regardless, babies will grow very quickly and outgrow their clothing as well. This means that it’s good to have at least a couple of sizes of clothes ready early on. As one size becomes too small, start dressing the baby in the bigger size prepared and purchase the next size beyond that.
